Tuning a djembe is not as hard as you might think. It’s a bit scary the first time you unwind the rope, but it’s actually very easy to do.
If you take djembe lessons you can get your teacher to walk you through it. But here’s a video of Kenya showing you step by step how to do it:-
Tuning is not a precise thing with a djembe, there is no ‘right note’. It’s personal preference – you may prefer a higher pitch, or a lower mellower sound.
But until you start playing with the ropes and tension you won’t know what your drum is really capable of.
